It is officially the year of vision and focus! Where the 1920s roared in loudly with new styles and a general rebellion against the "moral norms", the 2020s will soar high with acceptance and our own reinvention of "societal norms". Many of the influences to impact the 1920s were birthed right here in Detroit! The Industrial Revolution brought more wealth and people into the city than ever before. This allowed for unprecedented sharing of goods and information, and gave birth to some of the most fascinating subcultures in modern times. We tend to romanticize the 1920s woman with her sassy flapper wear and short hair, but those were more than just fashionable trends. Women were rebelling to be noticed, to have their voices heard. They were no longer going to be the quiet wife waiting at home. They had opinions and ambitions, and they were done pleading quietly for their rights. While women today have their own challenges to face, without the lionesses of the 1920s we wouldn't be nearly as close to equality as we are. There is an outdated Michigan law frequently cited when ridiculous outdated laws are discussed that prohibit a woman from cutting her hair without her husband's approval. Though it is difficult to find citation for the actual law, it is not hard to believe since that is one reason a 1920s flapper maintained short hair. A flapper's short hair was a snub directed at men who felt they could dictate their woman's appearance.

![]() Fall is creeping in and it is time to look forward to fall hair trends. Back to school season has some of us looking for new beginnings and fresh style, while fall cider mills opening and pumpkin spice scents have some of us longing for cosy comfort. Well, there is good news for both sides of the part (pun intended). The Great Divide: New York Fashion Week Fall 2018 exhibited quite a few hairstyles featuring a middle part. This is good news whether you prefer slick and sleek, or lived-in hair. To achieve a strong middle part, invest in a fine-tooth comb. R+Co’s TINSEL Smoothing Oil is the perfect match for shiny, frizz-free tresses that showoff your perfect part. Rest and Relaxation: NYFW also showed us that there is still plenty of room for relaxed waves to be paired with a more subtle part. Messy buns, bed-head waves, and claw clips (yep, they’re back!) all made appearances. Maybe it’s all the cozy flannel and familiar scents that have us nostalgic for more-comfort, less-fuss hair. Either way, we are ready to tuck in! R+Co’s AIRCRAFT Pomade Mousse helps you achieve the cosy, lived-in hair look that makes these relaxed styles shine--but not too much. Fall Colors: Living in Michigan, we are a bit spoiled when it comes to fall colors. Weekend color road trips and family photo shoots will be on everyone’s calendar. As the temps cool, we’ll see a rise in warm color. Rich caramels and golds, toasty brondes and mulled wine burgundies reflect the beautiful hues of the season. Just like the fall leaves’ rusty hues, warm browns and reds do not last long. Protect your color with a duo like R+Co’s GEMSTONE Shampoo and Conditioner which preserves and prolongs the life of your irresistible hair color. Visit Village Parlor Salon-Detroit to book an appointment to plan your fall transformation, or email us at bookings@villageparlordetroit.com. Lazy summer days are great, neglected hair is not. All that fun in the sun makes it hard to find time to break away and take care of our hair. We have products that can fit seamlessly into your existing haircare routine! Unless you want straw-like hair for fall (scarecrows are cute decorations, not a style choice), rescue your hair with a duo such as R+Co's ATLANTIS Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. R+Co ATLANTIS Moisturizing Shampoo, with its “ROSY EYED” scent, will bring your hair back to life. Nettle, rosemary, witch hazel, and Babassu Oil from Brazil (Brazil knows summer hair) work together to transform hair from parched to perfect. R+Co ATLANTIS Moisturizing Conditioner works to replenish thirsty hair. Leave on hair for 10 minutes to deep-condition exceptionally dry hair. Book an appointment with Village Parlor Salon-Detroit for picture perfect hair, and maintain your “Summer in Michigan” style with R+Co products best suited to take you beautifully into fall. Whether you recently went platinum, golden or honey, it takes some work to get and maintain healthy, vibrant blonde (or blond to some of you ☺️) hair. Your best bet when going blonde is to gradually work your way into a lighter color over time so that you can avoid damage. Once your desired hair color has been achieved, make sure to keep that light, bright and beautiful look with the proper products and couple of simple tips that will result in picture perfect hair at all times!
Choose the right shampoo and conditioner We recommend SUNSET BLVD Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner: where all the sparkly lights shine just that much brighter. By eliminating brassy tones, SUNSET BLVD Shampoo and Conditioner make blondes extra bright and greys fantastically silver. Think of it like Photoshop for your hair. Keep hair hydrated If you’re not a natural blonde, it generally means your hair is damaged and extremely thirsty. Nourish it daily with a leave in-treatment. Protect it from heat Hot tools are especially threatening to color-treated blonde hair. Minimize the damage from a blow dry or flat iron with heat-protection. Shield hair from the sun Hats and scarves are the best immediate defense, but if hair is going to be in direct sunlight, use products with UV filters. Keep it safe from water Take a dip with confidence. Apply your favorite conditioner before entering a pool or the ocean to create a barrier between your hair and the salt water or chlorine. After you come out of the water, rinse your hair as soon as possible to get rid of residue. Whether you are hoping to become a platinum blonde, rooty blonde, proper blonde and more, there is hope! With the right products and some easy to follow tips, you can achieve that long-lasting blonde you've always dreamed of!
