Soar into the '20's!

It is officially the year of vision and focus! Where the 1920s roared in loudly with new styles and a general rebellion against the "moral norms", the 2020s will soar high with acceptance and our own reinvention of "societal norms". Many of the influences to impact the 1920s were birthed right here in Detroit! The Industrial Revolution brought more wealth and people into the city than ever before. This allowed for unprecedented sharing of goods and information, and gave birth to some of the most fascinating subcultures in modern times.

We tend to romanticize the 1920s woman with her sassy flapper wear and short hair, but those were more than just fashionable trends. Women were rebelling to be noticed, to have their voices heard. They were no longer going to be the quiet wife waiting at home. They had opinions and ambitions, and they were done pleading quietly for their rights.

While women today have their own challenges to face, without the lionesses of the 1920s we wouldn't be nearly as close to equality as we are. There is an outdated Michigan law frequently cited when ridiculous outdated laws are discussed that prohibit a woman from cutting her hair without her husband's approval. Though it is difficult to find citation for the actual law, it is not hard to believe since that is one reason a 1920s flapper maintained short hair. A flapper's short hair was a snub directed at men who felt they could dictate their woman's appearance.

Although we needn't fear our father or husband's wrath where the length of our hair is concerned, could we see a revitalization of this rebellious style as we enjoy the freedoms hard won and push forward for equal rights for all? After seeing Michelle William's platinum locks at the 2020 Golden Globes, this is a movement we are fully behind.
